As dads, our lives are busy. Sometimes hectic. With a full-time job, all the yard work, fleet maintenance, and the honey-do list, it can get pretty crazy. But, what is really crazy, in years-past you were capable. You were superman.
What went wrong?
Maybe at one time you were an athlete. Maybe once you were in the military. Many years ago you were slim and fit. You had the girls looking, we all know. Now you’re not happy with what you’re seeing. You don’t like the way you feel. Regardless of your past, here you are now. You’re out of shape. You have no spunk. No get up and go. Believe me, I have been there.
You get in font of the mirror and just shake your head in disbelief. I know, it just happened and it was quick. But now here you are, rethinking your path. I have been there too. But what, if anything, are you going to do? Do you want to do something to regain you?
Well, I want to be the one to tell you about the first step.
The first step, of hopefully many along your fitness journey, begins with a single thought. Thoughts like: I want to get healthy again, I’m thinking of starting back to the gym, I’m gonna get healthy for me and my family, or even I’m tired of feeling terrible, just look at me! Whatever your thinking is, it all starts there. We all know the way you think directly communicates to your body. Your body follows what the mind tells it. We know that right?!
So here you are considering taking your first steps back into health and fitness, your very first steps into a new world. What do you do? Who do you ask for answers to your questions? These are common concerns. But, I can tell you where it all starts. It all starts with you and you asking yourself serious questions. “What? Ask myself questions? I don’t know the answers,” you may say. Sure you do! Here’s what you need to ask yourself:
1. Why am I thinking about getting healthy/fit?
2. Is this something I really want to do?
3. How long am I willing to give myself before I see results?
4. If I don’t see the kind of results I think I should have, what is my next move?
5. Am I ready now, at my age, to take the necessary steps and time necessary to live a better, healthier lifestyle?
Asking these simple questions can help get your mindset focused on what is ahead of you. The answers let you know where you stand. As I stated above, It starts with a thought and then the thought becomes action through your mindset.
The beginning can be very exciting, but you can also feel nervous. It may be overwhelming, especially if you have no experience with the whole “gym thing” or nutrition. But the first step, so the thought goes, is the most integral step into better health and a better quality of life.
